In June/July 2018 Emily Penn led 24 multidisciplinary women over 3,000 miles from Hawaii to Vancouver, and Vancouver to Seattle on board a 72ft sailing vessel. Between them they collected over 1,000 pieces of microplastic for scientists and sea water for analysis, identified their 'superpowers' to tackle ocean plastic and made plans at sea to create change on land. An important part of the voyages was the involvement with local communities, and outreach to share the experiences of sailing and science on board. The two crews carried out clean-ups in Oahu, Hawaii, Granville Island, Vancouver and Benson Island, British Columbia. They also shared their experiences with audiences in Vancouver and Victoria, and with press outlets, including BBC Breakfast, Stylist Magazine and the Independent.
