Rats and Rangefinders

An inquisitive macaque
Today was destined to be a rather gentle affair. Time to acclimatise and gather our thoughts in preparation for ten days of fieldwork. But we weren't left to ponder for too long. Pygmy tree shrews, a bearded pig and long tailed macques distracted us from calibrating cameras.

To our delight Sue arrived as scheduled, whereupon Adrian commenced the briefing. This was supplemented with contributions from our host, Benoit Goosens of Cardiff University and Fazine, his Ph.D student – due to accompany the team into the field.

In the meantime I familiarised myself with the satphone down by the shore. The only spot with reception – though a little too close to those crocs for my comfort! For the remainder of the day we spotted butterflies and sort some rest in preparation fo rtomorrow and our first proper foray into the jungle.

relieved to hear that you are all intact, and acclimatising well. The crocs are a bit worrying though. please be careful. they have little brains, just a viscious instinct to devour anything in range.
Best of luck with the elephants.
