 | A Kathmandu newspaper has reported that Raja Gaj, the giant elephant discovered by the SES in 1992, has reappeared in the Sal Forests of Western Nepal. The great bull, measuring 11 feet 3 inches at the shoulder, is believed to be the largest Asian elephant ever seen. SES carried out nine expeditions up to 2001 studying him and his 50 strong herd. However some five years ago Raja Gaj disappeared and was believed to have died. An obituary was printed in SESAME (the SES magazine) and his departure was mourned.
Now Ramesh Kumar Thapa, a warden, reports the big fellow is back in the Bardia reserve. A Kathmandu newspaper has published this and mentioned our film "Mammoth Hunt" which featured Raja Gaj.
At the end of February next year JBS is taking out a new expedition to seek the truth. For more information, please email JBS via our contact page. |
