For almost 20 years the Scientific Exploration Society has supported expeditions in Mongolia. This started with recce expeditions and then a major Raleigh project in 1992. More recently there have been community aid and palaeontoligcal projects assisting the eminent Mongolian Professor Altangeral Perle in his search for dinosaur fossils.

As may be imagined there is a great need for clean drinking water in this vast desert. Thus some of the projects have been supported by the Just a Drop charity.

In July 2011 Colonel John Blashford-Snell is planning a 16 day expedition to the remote Southern Gobi. This will involve a water project, several days travel on Bactrian camels and assistance to Professor Perle. The team will also visit the historic Ongi monastery, the remains of the ancient city of Karakorum and see the wild Przewalski horses that have been reintroduced to Mongolia.
